Edward: Bus Driver

Edward Daniels has been driving trucks and buses for a living since 2001. Edward was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn in 1964 and has lived there for most of his life. Before driving trucks and buses, Edward was employed with both the NYC Transit Authority and the U.S. Military. Unfortunately, neither job worked out into a full career, but when Edward saw people driving ambulances around, he stopped and thought to himself, “I can do that”.

Edward began training for his CDL (commercial driver's license) and on his first day, the Twin Towers were struck down. Edward remembers seeing streets covered in American Flags as he was first starting to drive trucks around the city. Edward first began driving for Consolidated Bus Company, one of the biggest yellow bus companies in NYC. Over time, Edward moved around to many other bus companies and trucking corporations. Some of these jobs would find Edward in at least four boroughs every day. Although he just started doing it because it looked easy, Edward found that he actually liked driving. He enjoyed how driving let him be on his own, see new parts of the city and country, and be outside without a supervisor constantly bothering him. Through driving buses, Edward has learned how efficiently New York City is constructed and has found an appreciation for its highway system. Edward also mentioned that he has learned the value of the seatbelt, after seeing and being involved in horrific accidents he may not have survived without his seatbelt.

Going forward, Edward sees himself working in ministry and has found some peace in his Christian faith. Everyday Edward drives me to and from school; he never forgets to say good morning, and shares an overwhelmingly positive energy with me and the other students on the bus from behind the wheel.
